Spring Meeting 2026 in L’Aquila: Facing the Future of Arboviruses

From 14 to 16 May 2026, EuroNet MRPH held its Spring Meeting in L’Aquila, 2026 Italian Capital of Culture, hosted by the University of L’Aquila at the “Luigi Zordan” Congress Center, jointly with the 4th Residents’ Day of the Consulta SItI, the Italian body of public health residents.

Poster of the EuroNet MRPH Spring Meeting 2026: Facing the Future of Arboviruses, One Health perspectives in the era of climate change. Congress Center Luigi Zordan, L'Aquila, 14 to 16 May 2026.

This year’s theme, “Facing the Future of Arboviruses: One Health Perspectives in the Era of Climate Change,” brought residents and experts together across human, animal and environmental health: the essence of a One Health approach to emerging threats.

A programme across three days

The scientific programme opened with Prof. Anna Odone (University of Pavia) on why arboviruses matter to public health, and ranged widely from there:

  • International cooperation and preparedness, and veterinary intelligence at the service of One Health (Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Abruzzo and Molise “G. Caporale”).
  • Genomic surveillance of emerging arboviruses and early warning in a warming world (Prof. Caterina Rizzo, University of Pisa).
  • The role of scientific communication in preparedness, and spatially-explicit modelling of invasive species under climate change (University of L’Aquila).
  • The urban-design dimension of One Health, travel in the era of climate change, and a front-line account of the Chikungunya outbreak in Carpi (Modena).

A record 19 abstracts, roughly double the previous year, competed in the European Scientific Contest, and the meeting hosted the EuroNet General Assembly (hybrid), the SItI Residents’ Committee meeting, and hands-on workshops turning evidence into public communication and advocacy.

Beyond the science, L’Aquila did what these meetings do best: it put residents from across Europe in the same room for three days. Conversations that start over coffee between sessions are how collaborations, exchanges and friendships across the network begin.

Our thanks to the Scientific Committee (Leila Fabiani, Elio Tolli), the Organising and Secretariat Committees, the University of L’Aquila, and the Consulta SItI, and to every resident who travelled to make it happen.

From 19 to 21 May 2025, EuroNet MRPH held its Spring Meeting in Paris, hosted across the Pitié-Salpêtrière and Saint-Antoine hospitals. 121 public health residents from across Europe came together under this year’s theme, “Transforming Public Health Professions in the Digital Age.”

EuroNet MRPH residents at the General Assembly of the 2025 Spring Meeting in Paris, 21 May 2025.

The programme wove together keynote sessions and expert roundtables, interactive capacity-building workshops and design challenges, and a high-level European Scientific Contest, alongside the social moments that make these meetings memorable, from walking tours of the city to a shared dinner at a classic Parisian Bouillon.

Paris also marked a milestone for the network: the official launch of the EuroNet MRPH Alumni Section, opening the door to long-term professional exchange across generations of residents. During the meeting we opened the call to host the 2026 Spring Meeting, a call that would take us to L’Aquila.

Congratulations to Tasnim Fareh, winner of the 2025 European Scientific Contest, for work on the association between particulate air pollution and the incidence of breast cancer. The scientific level across the session was exceptional, and every participant left having learned from one another’s work.

What participants told us

We surveyed attendees afterwards (n = 67 responses on satisfaction; n = 121 on travel):

  • Satisfaction: 69% satisfied or very satisfied; 72% said the meeting met or exceeded their expectations.
  • Scientific level: 67% rated it good or very good.
  • Reach: residents joined from Italy, France, Portugal, the Netherlands, Spain, Slovenia, the UK, Ireland and Croatia.
  • Sustainability: most travelled by train (32%), a figure we’d like to grow, as the network keeps sustainability in view when choosing hosts and formats.

Thank you to the Boards and Leads, the Organising Committee, and every participant who made Paris 2025 a success. The future of public health is something we shape collectively. See you at the next edition.

Spring Meeting 2024 in Madrid: Public Health Advocacy in Action

From Opportunity to Policy Impact: Public Health Advocacy in Action

Under the theme of “From Opportunity to Policy Impact: Public Health Advocacy in Action,” more than 150 European residents gathered in Madrid from May 9 to 11 to advocate for the role of “Public Health Advocacy” at the Spring Meeting Madrid 2024. Organized by the Association of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Residents (ARES MPSP), the event addressed the role of youth, planetary health, the destigmatization of mental health, universal health coverage and equity, the commercial determinants of health, and the health of migrant communities. The event was held at the Ministry of Health of Spain.

The opening ceremony featured the participation of Director General of Public Health and Health Equity (DGPH), Pedro Gullón, who celebrated the youth’s role in public health advocacy and emphasized the importance of putting health on all policy agendas. The President of EuroNet MRPH, Marta Caminiti praised the growth of the network and the importance of a united voice in public health. The Coordinator of ARES MPSP, Antonio Pujol de Castro highlighted the power of unity and associationism, acknowledging the contributions of various institutions. And the President of the Organizing Committee, Maryoli Veloso Fraigola emphasized our collective responsibility in public health advocacy and celebrated the event’s sustainability efforts, including vegan catering to reduce our carbon footprint.

Among the speakers were representatives from different national and international associations such as WHO, the EPHA, the EUPHA, YHO, Planetary Health Alliance, Save the Children, the International Organization for Migration, ISGlobal, Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine, Salud por Derecho, Association for fair Access to Medicine, CEEM, and National School of Health (ENS).

Francesca Zanni, advisor in the Quadripartite working group on Youth Engagement for AMR (WHO, FAO, UNEP, WOAH) and former President of EuroNet, stated that youth was a crucial stakeholder in public health. This is not only because they represent a significant portion of the world’s population but also because youth brings expertise to the table.  “We must ensure that the engagement opportunities we participate in are truly meaningful, and for that, we need to demand respect from the institutions that involve us. Being in a position to advocate for youth is a privilege influenced by financial independence, social factors, nationality, and caregiving responsibilities at home. Once you occupy that space, strive to keep it accessible to everyone.”

The event concluded on May 11 at the Ateneo de Madrid with the European Scientific Contest. The event was sponsored by Spanish Society for Healthcare Quality and Spanish Society of Preventive Medicine, Public Health and Health Management, and had the collaboration of the Ministry of Health, the Madrid DGPH, the Ateneo de Madrid, Spanish Society of Epidemiology, Madrid Public Health Association.

Maryoli, President of the OC said: I would like to thank the organizing committee for ensuring that this event showcases our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. We’re really proud that this event has been organized without any financial support from the industry, thanks to the EuroNet B&L and the collaborating societies that have supported us. In line with our commitment to sustainability, we’ve opted for vegan catering, not only for its low carbon footprint but also to support local and social economies. By choosing locally sourced vegan options, we aimed to reduce our environmental impact while contributing to the growth of our community.

Antonio Pujol de Castro, Coordinator of ARES MPSP, stated “The world is changing and medical and health professionals must be agents of social change for equity.”

Summaries of the panel discussions can be found on our SM social media channels.

Thank you very much to all of you who participated, and we will see you at SM25!

Spring Meeting 2023 in Genoa: Health in a Changing World

Health in a changing world – Climate change and environmental emergency: from prevention to consequences

Genoa EuroNet Spring Meeting 2023

Record number of participants and immense success for The Annual Spring Meeting of EuroNet MRPH, which was held in Genoa from the 21 to the 23 June 2023.

More than 200 professionals of the world of Public Health came from all over Europe such as Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Norway, England, Croatia, France, Ireland and Turkey. This helped make this conference a global forum for discussion and exchange of ideas.

For the first time in Genoa, the event touched on crucial points in the current debate in the scientific world, hosting speakers and moderators of considerable cultural depth and experience.

The congress, titled “Health in a changing world – Climate change and environmental emergency: from prevention to consequences” addressed several issues with a One Health and Circular Health approach: climate change and the consequent modifications of the planet in which we live, the effects of pollution on ecosystems, the new frontiers of vaccinology and biotechnology, as well as the compelling need to effectively communicate the importance of global health care not only to policy makers and academia, but also and especially to the general public, in order to induce the empowerment necessary for change.

Plenary sessions, interactive workshops and panel discussions among experts enriched the event and were received with enthusiasm and interest by all participants.

A particularly significant aspect of this congress was the commitment to sustainable environment. The organization made sure that the event was completely eco-friendly, using recycled and recyclable materials. In addition, instead of distributing traditional gadgets, a project was initiated in collaboration with ZERO CO2, which led to the planting of trees in the Corniglia area of the Cinque Terre with the aim of cutting down carbon dioxide emissions.

This Initiative demonstrates the awareness and concrete actions in contributing to the mitigation of climate change.

Particular audience participation was registered in the interactive workshops, which put the spotlight on the health of the planet, mental health and eco-anxiety, climate change education, and the communication of health and science topics, and the European science contest, which awarded research and innovations from across Europe.

Among the prominent national and international speakers who spoke at the congress, it is only right to mention the presence of Professor Ilaria Capua, who gave a concluding speech on the topic of Circular Health that left the audience in the hall with many insights to ponder.

In conclusion, the EuroNet MRPH Annual Spring Meeting, organized by the School of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine in Genoa, played a key role in raising the alarm about climate change and in indicating the importance of immediate action to protect the health of people around the world.

With the input of internationally renowned experts, unforgettable events and strong environmental sustainability, this congress will remain in the memory of all participants as a pivotal moment in the struggle for a healthier and more sustainable future.

EuroNet MRPH Spring Meeting 2022 in Lyon

EuroNet MRPH Spring Meeting 2022 in Lyon

Another marvellous meeting has come to an end.

This year, Lyon and Villeurbanne had the pleasure to host the EuroNet MRPH spring meeting 2022!

The first face-to-face meeting after 2 years of COVID- 19 pandemic.

“Happiness, unity and reunion” are the words that could describe this congress best.

Happiness: to finally see each other in person

Unity: to meet European colleagues, willing to learn and share knowledge about a very hot topic: “Global Health, the path to implement policies“.

Reunion: We can proudly say that almost 180 people attended the meeting.

Speakers from prestigious institutions and organisations such as Pr Agnès Buzyn (WHO), Dr Guillaume Dedet (OECD), Dr Serge Breysse (Solthis), Dr Luis Pizarro (UNITAID), Pr Didier Pittet (University Hospital of Geneva), Pr Andre Carvalho (IARC), Dr Shufhang Zhang (The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria) attended the congress as speakers. What an honour to welcome Pr Agnès Buzyn for the opening lecture.

WORKSHOPS AND ROUND TABLE

Participants also had the opportunity to attend workshops in 4 different structures on Friday morning: the Lymphoma Academic Research Organisation (Lysarc), Fondation Mérieux, Médecins du Monde (Doctors of the World) and Sanofi.

The goal of our event couldn’t have been fulfilled without constructive discussions about the COVID- 19 pandemic, and we decided to take advantage of the multiple skills of our speakers -Pr Pittet, Dr Pizarro, Dr Ortmans- to debate during a round table entitled “Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the global health approach”.
The theme of Global Health architecture and diplomacy in time of pandemic was also explored during the second day of the conference.
Simona Seravesi (WHO) and Marco Simonelli (ISS) presented the experience and efforts of the Italian G20 Presidency in promoting equitable, worldwide access to diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines.

FIRST EDITION OF THE EUROPEAN SCIENTIFIC CONTEST (ESC)

Eventually, the participants could attend and benefit from the first Euronet Scientific Contest (ESC), directly inspired by the CAISP, created by the CLISP, the french national PHR association. Seven residents from different countries had the opportunity to present their work to their colleagues and 6 other works were shown as posters! Great moments of knowledge sharing.

Congratulations to our Dutch fellow Inge Van De Luitgaarden who won the first edition of the contest with her study: “Alcohol-Attributable burden of cancer in Argentina”.

SOCIAL PROGRAM

Of course, the social program couldn’t miss this appointment! The Eurovision Song Contest, taking place during the same days of the congress, gave us the idea to have a thematic night and to share the enthusiasm of this event with all the European par- ticipants.
We also gave a taste of “French cuisine” to the attendants with a dinner in a typical “Bouchon Lyonnais”s. This experience was truly enriched by some popular songs sung by participants from all over Europe, testing their choral skills in Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese.
That’s why, EuroNet is also an exchange of culture and fun!
