Summer Meeting 2017 in Motovun

This year EuroNet Summer Meeting was in the beautiful city of Motovun in the Istrian hills of Croatia. Our wonderful hosts were the Croatian EuroNet team and the Croatian Public Health residents, consultants and colleagues from across the country. Twenty-one EuroNet members attended from 8 member countries. The meeting was coupled with the Croatian National Health Systems and Health Policy Conference, which provided a great opportunity to network and exchange knowledge and ideas.

Developing and building on existing partnerships was a key topic at the Summer Meeting. As EuroNet MRPH grows in size, we know that the partnerships we form and the work we can do with partner organisations becomes more and more important. One of the organisations we have a partnership with is European Public Health Alliance (EPHA), who will be organising a health advocacy workshop for us in Brussels on 28 and 29 September 2017. The workshop has proved hugely popular and is now full! A newly strengthened partnership is with the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER). ASPHER wants to reform the public health curriculum, by defining competencies a public health professional should have. We spent time discussing how competencies are integrated into the various European curricula. Furthermore, ASPHER had asked for a member of EuroNet to sit on their Executive Board and on their professionalisation committee: a great opportunity to further strengthen the relationship between ASPHER and EuroNet MRPH and work together more closely in future.

Internships are one of the core areas EuroNet works on, acting as a mediator between resident and institution, promoting opportunities for residents and actively searching for internship institutions. Goals this year are to institute internship tutors, to do a follow up study of the past three years, to evaluate the past six months, to plan the next year and to get more national and international placements, so the working group have a busy agenda ahead!

The EuroNet Platform launched during the Spring Meeting in Strasbourg is now LIVE and ready to go! The Platform is a unique new digital platform that gives residents the opportunity to collaborate on public health research projects. Visit the platform at www.euronetplatform.com.

The meeting was an opportunity to hear from colleagues from around Croatia about the work they are doing and learn from them. We were really lucky to receive a talk from the Cochrane Collaboration Team and we also heard from Professor Stjepan Oreskovic on the issue of leadership, something that as a group we know is important area for us to develop during residency to be able to effectively lead and manage change within our organisations.

Planning ahead: at the European Public Health conference in Stockholm this November we are co-organising a workshop with EuphaNXT and Young Forum Gastein about presenting a scientific work to a non-scientific audience. There will be two speakers; a journalist and a public health professional with experience in communicating with a variety of audiences and working internationally in public health.

As you know, EuroNet has always been a place to make both work links and long lasting friendships, and the meeting provided plenty of opportunity to get to know each other better over delicious food and drink.

See you in Lisbon!

New connections, new ideas

The idea of a network of residents in Public Health raised in 2008, in Rennes. Almost ten years passed by and the Network has incredibly evolved, faced new challenges and expanded its boundaries – or, more likely, proved to have no actual boundaries.

The construction of a network like EuroNet is not a simple task and constitutes a real, though necessary, challenge for young Public Health professional. Despite current, hopefully transient, political trends against internationalization and openness, the  future is open, international and interconnected. The vast majority of Public Health issues do not respect (national) boundaries – neither should our professional work. This is the reason why EuroNet members deeply value the idea of networking with other fellow residents and trainees as well as with Public Health specialists around Europe.

Public Health is about networking and networks and its future is open, international and interconnected. Summing everything up, one of the reasons why to be involved in this network is: new connections mean new ideas and better knowledge. The analysis of the education of Public Health specialists has always been one of the main purpose of the Network.

The yearly meetings, the internship exchange program, and the cross-country research are the main tools EuroNet is using to take on the monitor function of the training programs throughout Europe.

Our effort highlights that, although every country tries to answer to Public Health issues by a different organization both in Public Health political and scientific infrastructure, and in its education pathway, the main issues are the same across the continent. Finding new and sustainable ways of delivering healthcare, tackling the non-communicable disease epidemics of the 21st century, like obesity or diabetes, and working on new communicable disease challenges, such as the rise of antimicrobial resistant microorganisms, are all common issues in Europe. These challenges come along with the development of cities and the new needs that this development brings in terms of health, the demand for less polluted air and new spaces fitted out for physical activity.

The extent of these challenges shows how a « only national » answer is not an option and underlines the need to deploy all the tools and the multi-sectoral skills that Public Health has to offer us. Freedom of movement, trade and goods means that Public Health opportunities and threats also move freely across the continent. For this reason, Public Health in the European context will also mean further collaboration and integration of national associations and organisations.

Public Health in Europe is shifting from a traditional medical model to a multidisciplinary model characterized by remote work, out-of-the-box and forward thinking, advocacy, managerial skills.

We now know that the health of the population is mainly determined by the « social determinants of health ». This means that tools usually reserved for other disciplines are already a must in Public Health on a high level – meaning to produce change. Delineation between disciplines is disappearing and in the very near future we will have Public Health economists, architects, veterinarians and lawyers but also informaticists, mathematicians, philosophers and artists.

Taking all this into consideration, we are developing a heterogeneous network of collaborations. We closely and continuously cooperate with key young Public Health professionals associations in Europe like Young Forum Gastein (part of the European Forum Gastein) and EUPHAnxt (part of EUPHA). We cooperate with the central Public Health education association in Europe – ASPHER, with the idea in mind to better represent European resident in their educational choices. But we also cooperate with some non-core Public Health institutions like IEDC Bled School of Management in Slovenia. EuroNet is also a member of European Public Health Alliance (EPHA); with their help we plan to work on the advocacy skills of our members in the near future.

Public Health is a never-boring, perpetually-changing field to work in. The extent of this discipline, along with the pace of the changes, makes essential to work and learn together, facing the differences and crossing the borders. Through sharing information, facilitating exchanges and developing research, this is just what EuroNet MRPH aims to do. And it does it with enthusiasm and curiosity.

Spring Meeting 2017 in Strasbourg

As you may have read elsewhere on this website, EuroNet members meet each other face to face three times a year to exchange experiences and ideas and to make sure the network keeps running smoothly. The 2017 Spring meeting took place in Strasbourg, France.

What made this meeting extra special was the launch of EuroNet Platform, a unique new digital platform that gives residents the opportunity to collaborate on public health research projects (see www.euronetplatform.com). This launch took place on Friday morning in an equally unique location: the European Parliament in Strasbourg. After the launch, there was a tour of the Parliament, to give those with political aspirations their very first taste of Europarliamentarianship.

Friday afternoon was filled with interesting lectures by various public health professionals from Strasbourg University. On Saturday, we had our General Assembly and we worked on the various EuroNet MRPH working groups. You can read all about these working groups elsewhere on this website.

Two very full days indeed! Luckily, fun is also an important objective of EuroNet MRPH, and so there was enough time left in the program for tarte flambée, sauerkraut, wine and French karaoke. Pictures of this part of the program will remain in an undisclosed location.

ASPHER, EuroNet MRPH. Joint Statement on Public Health Workforce Development and Professionalisation

EuroNet MRPH, the European Network of Medical Residents (and Trainees) in Public Health, is happy to announce that it signed the Joint Statement on Public Health Workforce Development and Professionalisation: Call for a collaborative and consensus-building action.
ASPHER, the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region, led on the development of this Joint Statement in collaboration with various organisations and members of the EU Health Policy Platform.

ASPHER, EuroNet MRPH and other signatory organisations call for a collaborative and consensus-building action on the continuing development and professionalisation of the public health workforce in Europe.
This call takes into account the critical momentum in the relevant policy contexts (Action Plan for the EU Health Workforce and the European Action Plan for Strengthening Public Health Capacities and Services of the WHO Regional Office for Europe), the different perspectives and initiatives with regard to strengthening the public health workforce and aims to underline the need of an interdisciplinary and inter-professional action.

Please, download here the Joint Statement on Public Health Workforce Development and Professionalisation document.

EuroNet Platform crowdfunding campaign

The crowdfunding campaign to support the Platform Project is online and it will last until the end of the month of March.

The Platform is a unique network for European medical residents who have an interest in Public Health and want to create or participate to research projects.
By the means of the Platform, medical residents and trainees will be able to find or create work teams to develop their ideas. It is a great opportunity to let ideas come out and grow and to give free voice to young scientists.

You do not need to be a Public Health specialist or resident physician to want to get involved and support the campaign!
Even a little help means a lot for us and for this project!

Please, donate here: Wellfundr page.

Thank you!
